Established to supercharge the closure of Rikers Island
The Safe & Just NYC Fund, established in 2026 to supercharge the closure of Rikers Island, will ensure that this watershed political moment translates into coordinated, sustained impact.
By centralizing fundraising coordination across government, advocates/providers and philanthropy the Fund will allow participating nonprofits to focus their time and expertise on advancing this transformative effort rather than managing relationships with the dozens of philanthropies and individual donors seeking to support the work.
One for Justice established the Safe & Just Fund NYC Fund, which will be managed by Vincent Schiraldi, former Commissioner of Probation and Correction in New York City under Mayors Bloomberg and de Blasio, a member of Mayor Mamdani’s Criminal Legal System Transition Team, and currently a Doris Duke Distinguished Fellow at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, and Rebecca Brown, former national policy director for the Innocence Project and founder of Maat Strategies, LLC and Justice Strikeforce, a c(4) serving justice impacted people.
The Fund will work closely with the nonprofits to ensure that pooled resources are allocated strategically and equitably, enabling the full ecosystem of organizations to operate in coordination and maximize collective impact.
Giving coordinated by the Fund can be direct to the nonprofits or through the Fund. The Fund is guided by a small advisory panel of philanthropic leaders from Galaxy Gives, The Pinkerton Foundation, The Tow Foundation, and Women Building Up, providing additional accountability and strategic oversight.
